Our Sheep

As a sustainable farm operation we not only offer a diversity of fruits, vegetables, and flowers, but also meat and fiber from our growing flock of mixed breed sheep. These animals are not just mittens and chops. For us having livestock means more. They help to provide the nutrients that are necessary to grow vegetables, they maintain parts of our pasture, we enjoy their presence, and during the winter months they remind us that we are still farmers. We raise our sheep naturally, with care and consideration for their health. We are not seeking organic certification for our flock but we have begun using organic grain for their winter ration. During the summer months they are exclusively grass fed.

We currently have ten bred ewes that are expected to lamb in early May of 2007. There are many breeds represented in those ten including Icelandic, Romney, Finn, and Katahdin. Our new ram, ‘Gra’, is an Oxford Romney cross; he is big and he is beautiful. We are trying to mix good genetics for meat and fiber and hope eventually to have a well adapted hybrid that provides consistently both these criteria.

Currently we are sold out of both meat and fiber but they will be available again mid to late season 2007. Our yarn is spun at The Hope Spinnery in Hope, and we use all natural dyes that offer a full spectrum of colors in both 2 ounce and 4 ounce skeins. Lamb is sold pre-cut and frozen. We have everything from chops to garlic sausage and will also offer tanned lamb skins when they are available.

Our ewe Romney (a Romney Katahdin cross) lets her twins Mutumbo and Mayer nurse. Satisfaction.

More twins, Tikka and Curry who were born to Vindaloo. Vindaloo is on of our orginal ewes brought with us when we moved to Freedom from MDI.

How do I love thee indigo? Let me count the ways.

We use all natural dyes for our yarn. Ginger and her friend Julie dip cochineal and indigo to create variations of purple.
