CAMDEN FARMERS' MARKET GUIDELINES [As handed to prospective members, Spring '00] I. LOCATION AND TIME: The Camden Farmers' Market is located in the parking lot of Tibbetts Industries on Colcord Avenues. Market is officially open every Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to noon from mid-May to mid-October. Opening and closing market dates may vary slightly from year to year, as decided by the membership. II. ATTENDANCE: Members are expected to attend all scheduled market days. If unable to be present, they are expected to notify the Market Master prior to the start of that market. If a vendor is absent for three consecutive times without just cause, he/she is subject to review by other members. Members are expected to stay until noon on each market day, unless they are "sold out". Members may arrive prior to opening time for the purpose of setting up their displays, but may not sell until the official opening time. III. MEMBERSHIP: Application for membership is open to all Maine residents, but is limited to local home gardeners and small farmers; producers of added-value items, such as baked goods and preserves; craftspeople; local fishermen or distributors of Maine seafood products. Applications will be completed by all continuing members annually. Applications submitted by prospective members will be voted upon when there is an available market stall. IV. DUES: Annual dues for full-time membership are payable as follows: $25 by April 1st; $25 by July 15th. Dues for part-time membership will be $40 for a four week period, payable upon notification of application approval and at least one week prior to selling at market. All dues are non-refundable and cover from opening day to closing. Full-time members accepted during the course of the season will pay the full season's rate. V. STALLS (sites): One Member-One Membership-One Business Stall spaces shall be limited to fourteen (14) full-time vendors and two (2) part-time vendors. No more than 50% of these spaces shall be comprised of one type of product. Part-time spaces will be available for any four-consecutive-week period and will be open to any acceptable applicant on a first-come, first-served basis. After four weeks, the vendor may be eligible to join the market as a full-time member, if there is space available. He/she can also opt for another four-week part-time slot, if one is available. These four-week increments cannot be broken down into shorter periods of time. All stall spaces will be of equal size. Assignment will be decided by membership using either mutual agreements, seniority in retaining former spaces, and/or attempting to alternate product displays. A plan of the set-up will be kept by the Market Master and will be available to all members. Full-time members have priority over part-time vendors. Disputes among vendors of equal seniority will be settled by majority decision. Members are allowed to set up only one vehicle at a time and are expected to maintain a neat and tasteful display. Each member is required to clean up his/her space at the end of the market day. VI. PRODUCTS: All products sold at the Farmers' Market must be grown or made by the vendor. Products sold will include, but are not limited to, vegetables, seedlings, herbs, preserves, fresh-cut or dried flowers, meats, poultry, seafood, crafts, etc. Vendors may arrange to sell specific Maine-grown products with prior approval of the majority of the members, as long as these products do not exceed 50% of the vendor's display. When possible, members should submit their plans with applications, but must have approval at least one week in advance. All vendors must acquire any required licenses or permits for selling or producing their products. Copies of these licenses must be given to the secretary prior to selling at the market. VII. COMPLAINTS: In order to maintain quality standards, any complaints will be reported to the Market Master and to the vendor to whom the complaint is directed. All vendors are expected to maintain the market's standards of freshness and high quality. VIII. LIABILITY. All vendors must provide proof of liability insurance to the market secretary prior to selling at the market. IX. PRESENTATION. Vendors should present themselves in appropriate manner and dress (no alcohol consumption, unsportsmanlike conduct, and no hawking). Cooperation among vendors is expected . Vendors must display farm or business name and address in a prominent manner each market day. Vendors shall provide some means of posting prices of all products sold. X. NON-COMPLIANCE. When two or more vendors, on any market day, believe that the selling practices of another vendor are detrimental to the market, they may call for a special meeting of the membership. A majority of those present at that special meeting may require that the detrimental practes be changed to conform to membership standards. Failure to do so may be cause for immediate dismissal, if so voted by a majority of all market members. XI. ADDENDUM, SPRING '94: New members are provisional until completion of their first market season and approval of the majority of members. Provisional members do not have voting rights. Members are expected to attend the pre-season business meetings and participate in market activities. The number of full-time vendor spots is 16.
