MOFGA's Journeyperson Program
Maine Organic Farmer and Gardener's
Association (MOFGA), the oldest organization of its kind in the
country, has been supporting new and beginning farmers for over ten
years through its hands-on
Journeyperson program. The two year program offers integral technical, educational, and mentor support to
its participants. As JP's, Jeff and I receive crucial support as we
establish Woodsholm Farm and develop the skills needed to farm
independently and successfully. Our farming interests and goals shape
our experience as journeyfolk and for 2013 we chose
Tom Roberts and Lois Labbe of Snakeroot Organic Farm as our mentors.
They farm 5 acres of mixed vegetables, herbs, and perennials in
Pittsfield. They are awesomely wise, kind, and generous
in time and expertise in all matters related to small, organic, local
agriculture.
As aspiring new farmers, The
Journeyperson program enables us to gain advanced farming experience,
skills, and perspective in a supported environment. As JP's we also
benefit from participating in a network of like-minded, motivated, inspired (and
inspirational) people.
