Mushrooms

Over the last 5 years, our knowledge and techniques for growing mushrooms have steadily grown. We continually came back to the Fungi Kingdom while researching Plants and Animals. The world of Fungi opened up into a whole new arena of study within the natural environment. Many people are familiar with the White Button mushrooms and their varying forms of Crimini and Portobello of the grocery store. Some people are even familiar with Shiitakes, Oysters, or more.

At Heritage Farms we cultivate a variety of species of the mushroom world using a variety of techniques. We also collect and harvest wild Maine specimens of mushrooms and offer them for sale when they are available. Some of our crops are incorporated into the garden in a form of companion planting. Some mushrooms are based in the woods, in bag cultures, on log culture, stump culture, and sometimes in trays or other experimental areas. Our Maine climate is short and problematic for mushroom growers without a lot of capitol to invest in grow houses which allow the manipulation of the environment The "weeds" and pests that plague fungi are similar in annoyance, but completely different from the problems facing those raising animals or growing plants. Due to location, some of our outdoor beds are not able to be controlled as they would and crops flourish randomly when conditions are appropriate.

We are working to develop a regular flow of mushrooms on a weekly basis with Shiitake and Oyster mushrooms at this time. All of our woodland beds do not grow mushrooms on a schedule, so unexpected flushes happen from spring until fall. If you are interested in being on the mushroom list, please get a hold of us and let us know. We'll post on Facebook when mushrooms are available, but they go fast. Here are some of the varieties we are working to offer below.

We are experimenting with Portobellos at this time, but given the geography, cost, and climate of Maine, we will not be offering them for sale unless we can consistently produce quality product efficiently.
