Turkeys

Maine turkeys are one of the best reintroduced success stories there is in Maine, unless of course they are in your yard. Turkey problems often stem from two areas. The first is an agricultural setting where turkeys eat seeds, trample crops, and leave large holes in hay fields where they dust bathe. The other problem is often the same, except in small gardens and around homes.

Whole flocks of turkeys can leave a lot of droppings and make a lot of mess in someone's yard. Most control options involve a population reduction, preferably in the spring and fall that correspond with the open hunting seasons on these animals, as well as physical barriers where applicable to keep the turkeys out of an area.

Although it is not very common, turkeys can act aggressively during the spring mating period. This is the time when turkeys are "strutting" and the males will have deep red heads, gobble a bunch, and fluff up their body feathers and tail feathers into a large fan. They fight with other turkeys to determine dominance and a pecking order. While humans have been attacked, it is more common for automobiles to be attacked when the turkey sees their own reflection. Often an isolated event, if turkeys are causing problems for you, give us a call today and we will work to find a solution.
