Apple Sleuths Get a Boost from DNA Testing , by Jacob Mentlik, in the summer 2021 issue of the MOF&G.


Maine State Pomological Society list of apple varieties . Lists mainly Maine’s commercial varieties and the most popular of the heirlooms. “The Maine State Pomological Society sponsors the annual Maine Apple Sunday each September with participating orchards around the state. Maine Apple Sunday starts the peak of the apple harvest when summer apples are still available but the main crop is ready for its first pick. Apple orchards from Wells to Caribou will celebrate by offering special activities and free samples of apple products.”

The Maine Heritage Orchard . “The Maine Heritage Orchard is a ten acre preservation educational orchard located at the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) in Unity. The orchard is already home to over 300 varieties of apples and pears traditionally grown in Maine, with more being added each year.” Has descriptions and photos of many heritage apple varieties.
